Simultaneous fall and flow during pyroclastic eruptions: A novel proximal hybrid facies

چکیده

Abstract The deposits of Plinian and subplinian eruptions provide critical insights into past volcanic events inform numerical models that aim to mitigate against future hazards. However, pyroclastic are often considered from either a fallout or density current (PDC) perspective, with little attention given facies exhibiting characteristics both processes. Such hybrid units may be created where PDCs act simultaneously, transitional phase between the two occurs, and/or due reworking. This study presents analysis novel lithofacies found on Tenerife (Canary Islands) Pantelleria (Italy). coarse pumice block has an openwork texture correlates distal units, but it is cross-stratified relatively poorly sorted erosional base. proposed record simultaneous interaction very proximal turbulent PDCs, reveals fuller spectrum deposition than previously reported. work highlights importance recognizing in rock hazard modeling.

Sources of Unsteady Column Dynamics in Pyroclastic Flow Eruptions

During the first several minutes of an explosive volcanic eruption, the flow in the column above the vent is unsteady even if the discharge from the vent is steady. At a fixed location in the column, parameters such as temperature and ash content change with time until steady flow conditions are established. For conditions believed to be typical of fountain-forming silicic eruptions of intermed...

Evidence for Recent Large Magnitude Explosive Eruptions at Damavand Volcano, Iran with Implications for Volcanic Hazards

Damavand is a large dormant stratovolcano in the Alborz Mountains of northern Iran located in one of the most populous provinces, which could be adversely affected by tephra fall from Damavand. The youngest known eruption is a lava flow on the western flanks with an age of 7.3 ka. The volcanic products are predominantly porphyritic trachyandesite. Three major young pumice deposits, named here a...

Deep submarine pyroclastic eruptions: theory and predicted landforms and deposits

Submarine pyroclastic eruptions at depths greater than a few hundred meters are generally considered to be rare or absent because the pressure of the overlying water column is sufficient to suppress juvenile gas exsolution so that magmatic disruption and pyroclastic activity do not occur. Consideration of detailed models of the ascent and eruption of magma in a range of sea floor environments s...

Simultaneous production planning and scheduling in a hybrid flow shop with time periods and work shifts

Simultaneous production planning and scheduling has been identified as one of the most important factors that affect the efficient implementation of planning and scheduling operations for the production systems. In this paper, simultaneous production planning and scheduling is applied in a hybrid flow shop environment, which has numerous applications in real industrial settings. In this problem...
